Sometimes the sheer AWESOME of technology strikes me down. I just watched a recent episode of the TV show 'House'. Let's leave aside that I'd earlier plucked the show from the internetic ether in a matter of minutes via various devices and services.. which is cool enough. I liked the song played towards the end of the show.. it had something of the 'Bon Iver' about it. So I picked up my Ipad*.. a thing about the size of a small book, which isn't physically connected to anything.. yet holds the power to search worldly archives and quickly tell me that the song I liked was by 'In the Dirt' by S Carey (who, word to my ear, is a member of Bon Iver).
That's not the ace bit, though. The ace bit is that I then open up my 'Sonos' application on my Ipad, which I use to connect to my Spotify service, which then plucks the entire S Carey album out of the sky, and transmits it to a little box which throws the sound at me through my hi-fi**.
Just like that. At no point was I required to even stand up.
Do you remember when you heard a good song somewhere, and then spent weeks trying to find out what it was, and then had to find time to go out somewhere to buy the record, and THEN, maybe later that day you might finally get to sit at home and listen to it? I'm not saying all of that wasn't sometimes fun.. but it certainly wasn't awesome.
* So sue me. I never wanted one. Then I got one. And it's brilliant.
** Aside from the overriding awesomeness of simply being able to do this... I love that I have various hardware, software and services - all from different people - working together in harmony. The Ipad serves as a remote control for the Sonos, which I have linked with my Spotify service, and it also controls my hi-fi.. which the Sonos feeds into. Of course.. I can also do all these things from my computer (Mac, Linux or Windows PC) if I want, and I have the Spotify linked to my phone as well (made by HTC, running a Google platform). All these people, making all these things, and it all works together so that I can enjoy new music without standing up. Thanks, guys.
